Course Description

Discusses the history and archaeology of Ancient Egypt and Sudan informed by material finds, understandings of languages and scripts, biological anthropology and ethnoarchaeological studies. The Nile corridor has been proposed as a mediator of relations between the Mediterranean world and Sub-Saharan Africa. The extent to which this concept is helpful in understanding the relations between the regions of Ancient Egypt and Sudan is at the heart of the readings and discussions. Students will have an opportunity to gain a thorough understanding of the different methods used to study these relations with examples taken mainly from the study of scripts, material culture, play and architecture.
