Course Description

An introduction to the microbial world with emphasis on the importance of microbes in human survival and well-being. Topics in this nonmajors course include the role of microbes in biotechnology, industry, agriculture, and the environment as well as in infectious diseases. Assessing and controlling microbial growth is addressed and is an essential component of Public Health. Lectures are complemented with case studies, student presentations, hands-on activities during class time, and a site visit to a nearby sewage treatment plant. The course is one of the core courses for the Public Health Minor. Does not meet requirements for major or minor in Biology.
