Course Description

A comprehensive introduction to the nature and diversity of microorganisms and the roles they play in health, disease, and the ecosystem. Covers bacteria, viruses, protozoa and fungi. Examines the ecological, structural, cellular, and molecular features of microbes and explores how some of these features affect host/microbe interactions. Laboratory work incorporates methods of bacterial isolation and identification, including microscopy, use of selective and differential media, biochemical and serological tests, and rapid ID methods.
