Course Description

Students are immersed in the art of close reading, exploring topics which may include intimacy and isolation, war stories, justice, ghosts, and the Holocaust. Attention is paid to what a text communicates, as well as how it does so through linguistic textures, imagery, narrative patterns, structure, and genre. Focus is placed on students sustaining practice as writers of literary criticism whose interpretations are based on textual evidence and should move fluidly between the voice of the author and the voice of the interpreter. Students have the opportunity to develop their ability to read and write about a literary text throughout the class.
