Course Description

Provides the opportunity for in-depth study of popular genre fiction, such as crime, science fiction, romance, horror, fantasy, spy fiction, and more. How and why do such genres sustain their popularity? How do they encourage us to view the world? How do they both differ from, and overlap with, more “literary” writing? Attention will be paid to both the development of generic conventions and their inevitable subversion, in addition to how genres transform and adapt to different social and historical contexts. The genre focused on will vary with the instructor.
