Introduces students to rhetoric as a concept through surveying and comparing various historical frameworks and theoretical approaches. Topics may include the disputed definitions of rhetoric, specific historical figures and flashpoints key to rhetoric's development, evolving theories of the rhetorical situation, and the ancient links between rhetorical studies and civic life. May also present opportunities to consider rhetoric’s relation to politics, education, technology, law, and cultural identity.
