A study of representative texts from Shakespeare's three major genres: the comedies, tragedies, and history plays. Attempts to situate Shakespeare within the cultural, political, and social contexts of Elizabethan and Jacobean London and considers ways in which the playwright, wildly popular in his day, was intent on speaking both to power and the people.
