Paris: The Biography of a Capital

Course Description

Paris, "the City of Lights," "the city of love," "the capital of the world.” An interdisciplinary seminar that explores the imaginative representations of the French capital from the French Enlightenment through the 21st century. Based on novels, short stories, poetry and film, students discuss such questions as: When and how have representations of and ideas about Paris changed over time? How do individuals and groups relate to and respond to the City of Lights? How do gender, race and class affect Parisians', Provincials', immigrants' and tourists' experience of this city? Historical and cultural material, art and photographic images, and city maps may be used to contextualize the literary and film texts.
