Course Description

Examines medicine and disease in western history, with an emphasis on the 19th and 20th centuries. Seeks to provide students with the historical knowledge necessary for understanding contemporary responses to disease. In addition to studying the development of specific medical ideas and techniques, a primary focus will be on investigating medicine as a complex social and cultural phenomenon.
