Course Description

Develops pedagogical content knowledge for teaching language and emergent literacy in early childhood settings. Grounded in developmentally appropriate practice and aligned with the New Jersey Preschool Teaching and Learning Standards, the course examines cognitive and linguistic foundations of early learning, including speech and language development and support for diverse learners. Emphasis is placed on developmentally appropriate guidance and group management to create safe, inclusive classroom environments and critical examination of inequities. Includes play-based learning experiences that foster intellectual stimulation through art, music, oral language, and purposeful play, observation-based and performance-informed assessment to monitor growth, early literacy screenings, and responsive instruction.
