Course Description

Focuses on the interdisciplinary aspects of literature and texts that represent colonial, neo-colonial and post-colonial encounters (Columbus and the "cannibals;" Malinche and Cortez; Pocahontas and John Smith; Prospero and Caliban; contemporary migrants and the immigration officials at the sea or land border of USA or Spain). Students will have the opportunity to discuss the notions of power and powerlessness, center and periphery, purity and hybridism, First and Third World, cultural identity and globalization that may be present in these encounters.
