Course Description

Aristotle didn't care for it. Mae West got arrested for it. Great comedy engages the same life and death themes as tragedy, allowing the artist and audience to go deeper into issues than convention and taboo ordinarily allow. From the pacifist cross-dressers of Lysistrata to the globe-trotting resistance fighters of Lisa Kron's The Verizon Play, students examine how rules are made and broken, how gender is defined and bent, how hot topics are set ablaze, shedding light, cauterizing wounds and sometimes leveling the ground between the powerless and the powerful.
