Course Description

Explores the ways in which the cinematic representation of LGBTIQ individuals has shifted and evolved since the inception of cinema, unpacking some key questions, including: How do films represent queer people? How can they influence the ways in which queer people are perceived? Examines some of the first queer films ever made, the ways in which LGBTIQ characters were depicted in film during the Production Code era, the birth of New Queer Cinema in the late 1980s/early 1990s and examples of contemporary American and world queer cinema. Students will have the opportunity to learn key concepts of queer theory and queer film scholarship and how they can be applied to analyze a variety of queer films of different genres, historical periods and socio-cultural contexts.
