Course Description

Provides an overview of the historical, social, philosophical, and political foundations of education and special education in the U.S. Students analyze both the politics and policy of schooling; exploring debates over the purposes of public education, and examining the individuals, groups, and institutions that compete to control schools. Students also examine debates over specific school reforms such as integration, standards and testing, equalization of school finance, school choice, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the No Child Left Behind Act, as well as the unique challenges facing urban schools. Students may study the laws that have enhanced and constrained educational opportunities for students of color, those living in poverty, those with disabilities, and English Language Learners.
