An introduction to the field of linguistics, examining both formal properties of languages (morphology, syntax, phonetics and phonology) and the history, variation, and cultural dimensions of language. Topics may include language and gender, language and ethnicity, language and social structure, as well as the role of language and its various forms of transmission in the construction of individual and cultural identity.
