Course Short Title
Intensive Reading, Pre-1900
Course Long Title
Intensive Reading of a Single Text Pre-1900
Course Description
Allows sustained concentration on a single text from a period before 1900. In some semesters, the text itself may be a long and difficult one (e.g., Milton's Paradise Lost, Eliot's Middlemarch, James' Portrait of a Lady). In other semesters, students may indulge in a more accessible literary text but that text will be viewed through the lenses of various kinds of interpretation (e.g., cultural criticism, performance theory, formalism, gender studies, deconstruction, psychoanalytical theory).
