Course Long Title

North African Film From Decolonization to Globalization (in French)

Course Description

Examines the quest for new narrative codes and techniques that capture reality in Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria, and explores, in particular, the question of identity, through examples of this region’s contemporary film production. A theoretical framework and historical and cultural contexts provide the analytical tools to explore the following questions among others: In what ways do North African film directors address, challenge, resist or escape history? How do these films treat gender, social class, tradition/modernity, rural vs urban realities? How do the Arabic and French/European cinematic traditions relate to one another and shape this production? What economic, political and cultural factors determine both the production and distribution of these works?
