From Renaissance to the Enlightenment Through Art, Literature, Religion and Music

Course Description

This course offers an interdisciplinary introduction to the formative period of the Renaissance up to and including the Enlightenment (ca. 1400-1800) in Western European history. It is many people’s favorite time period (often spoken of as the “Early Modern period) because of the profound and enduring shifts in thought and practice which continue to shape our ideas and practices today. These shifts can be characterized in many different ways, including: Distinguishing sacred from secular (religion); exploration of subjectivity and perspective (the arts and letters); the Age of Discovery (science) and the rise of the cult of reason; the transition from medieval societies based on the privilege of blood line, land holdings and barter to capitalism (socio-economics); and negotiation between elite and popular (social and political). This course will present and explore these overlapping transformations through various readings and discussions. The goal of the course is to give students a thematic and comprehensive view of this transformative period. Cross-listed with WGST.
