Course Description

Neuroethics is a relatively new and rapidly expanding field of inquiry that transcends the boundaries between philosophy, psychology and neuroscience. The common focus of the field of neuroethics is the relationship between mind, brain and behavior. How does the activity and physical substrate of the brain shape behavior? As more is learned about brain function and dysfunction, how do experts identify and evaluate the ethical issues that arise, especially with regard to experimentation and therapeutic intervention? Some key topics to be explored in this course include the relationship between brain and self, the ethics of cognitive enhancement, the neurobiology of moral reasoning and responsibility, and consequences of neural damage and degeneration.
