Course Description
Introduces students to the study and practice of social movements. Students will have the opportunity to engage with theories of social movement mobilization, focus on the development of movement strategies and aims, and assess the impact of movements on the American social, political, and policy landscapes. Anchored by an examination of the African American Civil Rights movements of the late 1950s and 1960s and the contemporary Movement for Black Lives. Examines movements centering on Women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, environmental rights, and Immigrant Rights, among others. Particular attention will be paid to the status of the rights afforded to each group before its collective mobilization and in the aftermath of its political activism.
