Representations of Self: U.S. Latinx Identities in Literature and Popular Culture

Course Description

Examines the construction and self-representation of U.S. Latinx identities in literature and popular culture. Considers how different Latinx groups utilize autobiographical modalities (e.g. memoir, first-person fiction, performance art, film, and televisual media) to address and engage with evolving notions of ethnic labeling, language, race, gender, citizenship, sexuality, and immigration/exile/diaspora within bicultural and bilingual contexts. Pays special attention to the role of memory and postmemory, space, and the performance of Latinidad in the expression of Latinx identities and cultures. Taught in Spanish.
