Requirements for the Major (34 Credits)


I. Core (16 credits)

Complete all of the following:

  • course - Intermediate German

  • course - German Culture and Conversation

  • course - Introduction to German Studies

  • course - German Literature and Culture

Note: Heritage speakers and other advanced students whom the German Studies program determines are fluent in German should substitute an upper-level elective in German Studies beyond course in place of any course that they test out of.

II. Electives in German Studies (12 credits)

Complete 12 credits, selected from the following. One 4-credit elective in German Studies may be taken in English: course, course, course, or course.

  • course - German Studies in English

  • course - German Literature in English

  • course - German Culture in English

  • course- German Film in English

  • course - Periods in German Literature

  • course - Themes in German Literature

  • course - German Film

  • course - German Studies

III. Elective in Another Discipline (4 credits)

In consultation with their major advisor, majors must complete an additional 4 credits in a course that has a topic related to German Studies, including:

  • course - Europe, 1914-1945: The World Wars and the Great Dictators

  • course- Perspectives on the Holocaust

  • course - The Shattering of Reason: From Hegel to Nietzsche

  • course - German Film in English

IV. Capstone (2 credits)

Normally taken in the senior year. Students enroll in 2 credits of course while taking an upper-level German-language course such as course, course, course, or course. The capstone involves guided research that concludes with a substantial paper in German on a topic chosen in consultation with their major advisor.

Note

It is strongly recommended that all German Studies majors study abroad in a German-speaking country. Students considering graduate study in German should take additional courses in areas such as history, literature, mythology, philosophy, linguistics, political science, and another language.
