Requirements for the Major (44 credits)


I. American History Survey (4 credits)

Complete the following:

  • course - History of the United States, From Contact to 1877 OR course - History of the United States, 1876-Present

II. European History Survey (4 credits)

Complete the following:

  • course - Europe from the Age of Exploration to the Atlantic Revolutions: 1450s to 1800s OR course - European History 1789-1989: Nationalism, Totalitarianism, and Rebirth

III. Global History (4 credits)

Complete 4 credits, selected from the following:

  • course - History of Imperial Russia

  • course - History of the USSR

  • course - Global History

  • course - The United States and the World

  • course - Global Women’s History

IV. Additional (24 credits)

Complete 24 additional credits, selected from the History Department course offerings.

V. Historical Research Methods (4 credits)

Complete the following:

  • course - Historical Research Methods

VI. Capstone (4 credits)

Complete the following:

  • course - Capstone History Research Seminar

Advanced Placement (AP) Examinations

A score of 4 or 5 on the American history examination exempts the student from course or course. A score of 4 or 5 on the European history examination exempts the student from course or course.

Note

In completing the above requirements, at least 20 of the 44 credits must be in upper-level History. It is recommended that majors take course in their sophomore year, and that students who want to write an Honors thesis take course in their junior year.
