Requisites
Requirements for the Major (40 credits)
Note: Students are required to take one course that focuses on Africa and one that focuses on the African-American experience.
I. Interdisciplinary Core (12 credits)
Complete the following:
A. AFRC (8 credits)
B. Experiential Learning and Civic Engagement (4 credits)
course - Experiential Learning Seminar in Africana Studies
course - Internship Project
course - Theatre in The Community: The Newark Collaboration
Note: Study-abroad on-site courses and off-campus programs may be included with appropriate content and location.
II. Electives (28 credits)
Complete 28 credits, including at least 12 upper-level credits, selected from the following:
A. Social Sciences (8-20 credits)
Courses must be taken from at least two different subject areas.

Notes
Students should consult the list published each semester by the Africana Studies program for additional courses. Other CLA, Caspersen, and Theological School courses may be applied to the major if they are proposed to and approved by the Africana Studies Committee.
Students interested in pursuing graduate studies are encouraged to write an Honors Thesis.
