Requisites
Requirements for the Minor (20 to 26 credits)
I. Language (8-10 credits)
Complete 8-10 credits, selected from the following:
course - Elementary Modern Standard Arabic
course - Elementary Modern Standard Arabic II
course - Fundamentals of Oral and Written French I
course - Fundamentals of Oral and Written French II
Note: Students who already speak (intermediate-level or better) French or a Middle Eastern language (Arabic, Berber, Farsi, Hebrew or Turkish) may have the language requirement waived. Instead, they should take one additional 4 credit elective.
II. Core (4 credits)
Complete 4 credits, selected from the following:
course - History of the Modern Middle East
course - Middle East Development
course - Middle East Politics
III. Electives (12 credits)
Complete 12 credits, selected from the following. Additional courses must be spread across at least two of the following four areas. Note also that between the core and the electives, at least three different disciplines should be included.

course - Archaeology of the Middle East: from Meroe to Baghdad
course - Islamic Art
course - Special Topics in Art History: International (when topic is appropriate)
course - The Art of Ancient Egypt: History and Modern Myth
course - History of the Islamic Middle East, 600-1800

course - The Humanities and Islam
course - The Jewish Experience: An Introduction to Judaism OR course- The Jewish Experience: An Introduction to Judaism

B. Social Sciences
course - Regional Archaeology (when topic is appropriate)
course - Selected Topics in Cultural Anthropology (when topic is appropriate)
course - Middle East Development
course - Gender and Globalization (approval required for Minor) OR course- Gender and Globalization (approval required for Minor)
course - Political Economy of War and Peace (approval required for Minor) OR course - Political Economy of War and Peace (approval required for Minor)
course - Middle East Politics
course - Selected Studies in Political Science (when topic is appropriate)
course - Muslims and the West
course - Contemporary Issues in Sociology: Interdisciplinary International Topics (when topic is appropriate)
C. Language and Literature
course - Intermediate Modern Standard Arabic I
course - Protest in the North African Tradition: From Colonization to the Arab Spring
D. TREC
TREC programs that involve travel to the region also may count towards the Minor.
With the approval of the Director of the program in Middle Eastern and Muslim Communities, students may count towards their minor other appropriate intermediate- and upper-level courses, which may be offered from time to time.
Note
Students contemplating graduate or professional work related to the Middle East are strongly encouraged to study Arabic and to supplement their study of the language with intensive summer language programs recommended by the Director of the Middle East Studies Program.
