Requirements for the Minor (20 credits)


I.  Middle East Region (8-16 credits)

Complete a minimum of 8 credits, and up to a maximum of 16 credits, selected from the following:

  • course - Archaeology of the Middle East: from Meroe to Baghdad

  • course - The Art of Ancient Egypt: History and Modern Myth

  • course - Middle East Development

  • course/course - North African Film From Decolonization to Globalization (in French)

  • course - History of the Islamic Middle East, 600-1800

  • course - History of the Modern Middle East

  • course - Middle East Politics

II. Middle East within a Broader Framework (4-12 credits)

Complete a minimum of 4 credits, and up to maximum of 12 credits, selected from the following:

  • course - Islamic Art

  • course - The Jewish Experience: An Introduction to Judaism

  • course - Jewish History from Roman Times to the Enlightenment

  • course - The Humanities and Islam

  • course - Muslims and the West

  • course - Introduction to Islam

Additional Eligible Coursework with Approval from the Program Director.

Students may complete up to 8 credits from the below courses with approval from the Program Director.

  • course - Regional Archaeology 

  • course - Selected Topics in Cultural Anthropology 

  • course - Special Topics in Art History: International 

  • course - Independent Study in Art History

  • course - Intermediate Open Topics: International

  • course/course - Gender and Globalization

  • course/course - Contemporary Francophone Cinema

  • course - Independent Study in French

  • course - Voices from Africa and its Diaspora

  • course - Selected Topics in Jewish Studies

  • course - Independent Study in Political Science

  • course - Global Discourse on Human Rights

  • course - The United Nations System and the International Community

  • course - Research Seminar on the United Nations

  • course - Contemporary Issues in Sociology

TREC and Study Abroad 

TREC courses that involve travel to the region may be counted towards the minor as well as courses pursued in a study abroad program in the region. Students should contact the program director for approval.
