Requirements for the Minor (20 credits)


I. Gateway (4 credits)

Complete the following, which must be taken before advanced courses in literature and cultural studies, and may be taken concurrently with advanced electives in language, linguistics, and community-based learning:

  • course - Gateway to Hispanic Literature and Cultural Studies

II. Additional (16 credits)

A. Second-Language Learners

  1. Advanced-Intermediate Language Sequence (12 credits)

  • course - Advanced Spanish Language and Culture through Images and Film

  • course - Spanish Conversation in Cultural Contexts

  • course - Exploring Culture through Writing

Notes:

  • It is recommended that students take Spanish Conversation before Spanish Composition. Students may take their final course in the Advanced Intermediate Language Sequence concurrently with course.

  • Students who place out of one or more of the above courses through the Spanish placement exam, or whom the department determines have met the respective Spanish proficiency, should substitute the credits of the course(s) with upper-level electives offered by the department.

  1. Upper Level (4 credits): Available courses listed below, under “Areas”

  • 4 upper-level credits taught in Spanish. With departmental permission, advanced students may substitute a Hispanic Studies Seminar. Students who take 0-8 credits in the Advanced-Intermediate Language Sequence (through placement or departmental permission), may apply 4 credits offered in English by the department.

B. Heritage Learners

  1. Advanced-Intermediate Language Sequence (8 credits)

  • course - Exploring Culture through Writing

Notes:

  • Students may take Spanish Composition concurrently with course.

  • Heritage learners who place out of one or more of the above courses through the Spanish placement exam, or whom the department determines have met the respective Spanish proficiency, should substitute the credits of the course(s) with advanced electives offered by the department.

  1. Upper level (8 credits): Available courses listed below, under “Areas”

  • 8 upper-level credits, 4 of which must be taught in Spanish. With departmental permission, advanced students may substitute a Hispanic Studies Seminar.

Note

It is highly recommended that all Minors complete at least one of the following related to Spanish or a Spanish-speaking country:

  • A semester abroad

  • Summer abroad

  • Short-term program

  • Community-based learning course, or

  • Internship.
